About Echo Pond:
The Echo Pond Environmental Education Centre is a unique hub for environmental education and outdoor adventure. Nestled in the beautiful boreal “Fog Forest” of the Avalon Peninsula (about 1 hour 15 minutes from St. John’s), we offer immersive outdoor experiences that connect youth with nature through hands-on, backcountry-based programming.

Overview:
We are seeking a capable and outdoors-oriented Canoe Program Assistant to support the development of our new wilderness canoe program. Working alongside our program lead, you will help prepare our base camp and co-lead a pilot canoe trip with youth participants.

This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys backcountry travel and wants to be part of building a program from the ground up. If you’re comfortable in a canoe, willing to pitch in where needed, and enjoy working outdoors, we encourage you to apply—even if you don’t meet every qualification.


Position Type & Duration:

Position Type: Casual (with potential for additional work as the program grows)
Timeline: Spring 2026 and beyond (initial work focused on base camp setup and a pilot trip)
Hours & Pay: $20–$25/hour based on experience


Key Responsibilities:

Base Camp Preparation: Assist with setting up and organizing the canoe base camp, including gear prep and site setup.
Trip Leadership: Co-lead a pilot canoe trip with youth, supporting safety, logistics, and overall experience.
Logistics & Support: Assist with trip planning, packing, and general program needs.
Outdoor Leadership: Model safe and responsible backcountry practices at all times.


Qualifications & Desired Skills:

Outdoor Skills: Comfortable canoeing, including paddling and portaging; experience with backcountry camping.
Youth Experience: Experience working with youth is an asset.
Certifications: Valid First Aid certification required (Wilderness First Aid preferred).
Paddling Training: Paddle Canada certification is an asset.
Personal Traits: Reliable, adaptable, and comfortable working in a dynamic outdoor environment.
Screening: Must provide a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check.
